Birkenhead once again led the country’s efforts to prevent children being hungry during the six-week summer holiday. Over 1,100 children benefitted from the programme of free meals and activities provided by Feeding Birkenhead. And the programme continues to build up a head of steam. Added to our regular programme over the summer was a truly inspirational Assistant Headteacher, Louisa Blake, who took it upon herself to prepare lunches for 150 children every day, mainly in the North...
Might I please thank Birkenhead residents for sponsoring a group of local volunteers who completed the Wirral Coastal Walk for Feeding Birkenhead? Our volunteers raised over £1,500 on the Walk. Every penny of this sum will be going towards healthy school breakfasts – porridge, fruit drinks, fruit snacks, and cereal – for hundreds of children across the town, to ensure they are ready to learn at the beginning of each school day. Thanks to Birkenhead residents’...

But we know there are some parts of town where families are unable to access the service. The all-party inquiry on hunger amongst...
The Hive holds great promise. It has been very much the brainchild of Councillor Jean Stapleton, who has driven this project from the very first time she joined a Steering Group to look at a potential Youth Zone in Wirral. Trips were made by councillors and officials to youth zones in Bolton, Oldham and Wigan. We were all massively impressed seeing the clubs heaving with activities all being undertaken by an army of young people. The Hive will offer a similar range of activities. There...
