Birkenhead schools and charities take delivery of 156,000 free breakfasts

14 March 2017
His Church Birkenhead’s primary schools and charities have taken delivery of thousands of free breakfast products – the equivalent of 156,000 meals – to help sustain their breakfast clubs, following local residents’ donations to the Feeding Birkenhead programme.

The products were collected at an event held last Friday in Hamilton Square which was organised by Feeding Birkenhead and His Church. Food distributed included cereal donated by Kellogg’s as part of their Help Give A Child A breakfast Campaign and food that would otherwise have been sent to landfill, or been burnt, as it had become surplus to retailers’ and manufacturers’ requirements.

In addition to free boxes of cereal, schools were able to collect hampers of porridge, muesli, spreads, fruit snacks and fruit drinks, thanks to donations from Birkenhead residents. The donation towards each breakfast pack was £20 and residents had donated a total of £200 for the event. Ten schools received hampers from the event.

Commenting on the event, Frank Field MP said: ‘As well as free meals and fun for children during the holidays, the provision of free school breakfasts has become a priority for Feeding Birkenhead. We are so pleased to team up with His Church so we can link the town’s schools into this supply of wholesome recycled food, ensuring hundreds more children can begin the school day ready to learn.’

Richard Humphrey, His Church’s co-ordinator added:  ‘In collaboration with Feeding Birkenhead, Tranmere Rovers and Kellogg’s, His Church has distributed over 500,000 free breakfasts over the last nine months, to children and families in the Birkenhead area. The event at Hamilton Square, with the spectacular backdrop of Birkenhead Town Hall, was the perfect way to celebrate the ongoing success of our partnership. We were particularly touched by the support of local residents which helped us provide a range of healthy breakfast packs to schools, made up of great quality food which would have otherwise gone to waste.’
