Statement on the rights of EU citizens living in the UK

09 February 2017
Commons Chamber ‘I totally accept the need to offer assurances to those EU citizens who already reside in this country. They should not be used as a bargaining chip in the negotiations.

‘Throughout the course of the debate on Article 50, the Government gave several undertakings on this front. The Prime Minister likewise wants to move quickly to a decision linked to the safeguarding of British citizens living in the EU. MPs have been assured that we will be given another chance down the line to scrutinise the Government’s decisions, and vote on them.

‘But an overriding concern yesterday was to ensure the Article 50 bill left the Commons without any amendments. Had those MPs who oppose Brexit managed to amend the Bill in the Commons, this would have given the Lords grounds to mess up further the result of the referendum.

‘I will, of course, keep a close eye on this matter as the negotiations get underway, and will also encourage the Government to guarantee the rights of those EU citizens who already reside in this country.’
