Birkenhead’s MP welcomes new investment in school-based nursery places

03 July 2019
Commons Chamber

The announcement of new capital funding to help three Birkenhead schools provide high-quality nursery places for two-, three- and four-year-olds in the town, has been welcomed by Frank Field MP.

St Anne’s Catholic Primary School, St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, and The Priory Parish CofE Primary School are among 66 schools in England to receive a share of the Government’s School Nurseries Capital Fund.

Since submitting an official report to the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, on the range of new policies required from the Government to boost the life chances of children from disadvantaged areas, Frank has been campaigning for schools to be given the resources they need to offer high-quality nursery places.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Frank says: ‘This is really important news for the town. The places being funded by this scheme will begin to help many more children start school on a level playing field, rather than behind their peers. I will continue pushing for additional funding that enables Birkenhead to have an even more comprehensive programme – including home visits which enable all parents to become their child’s first teacher – so that every child is given the best start in life.’

Frank is compiling a bid for additional funds to support an intensive programme, through which parents in parts of Birkenhead would receive two home visits a week – with a new book or educational toy being brought in for their child during each visit – and be given greater confidence to read to their child, to nurture them, and to have fun with them.
